~ Just Another Day ~

Little bit of me, little bit of you.

omocat:

always

Hmm a thought just popped up… I remember there was a time, when we read, do math etc. for the sake of learning, to be smarter, to absorb what this world has to offer… I haven’t used the phrase, “I’m learning!” for a while now. Lately it’s just “Okay, memorize this crap, next chapter” It’s been so long since I’ve thought about the concept that I am acquiring knowledge for the sake of simply, acquiring knowledge. I’m not doing this for some examination or for some grim future. I should return to that younger self, where I do what I do for the sake of learning something new. Maybe that can be a powerful motivation in my everyday life. Well, back to cramming, oh I mean learning the wonderfulness of this bloody amygdala…

Hmm…

… should probably create a list of things I wanna do over the summer…

… which I probably won’t follow anyway…

… but it’ll make me feel like I have a goal to reach over the next four months…

… but then it might make me feel pathetic if I don’t succeed…

… meh…

… still reading this?…

… hi, how was your day?…

… cool…

… I need to go to the washroom…

… goodbye…

Hmm…

I’m back!

Really got nothing interesting to say… and probably won’t make this fun… (reason I haven’t blogged :D) anyway here for a selfish post. Obviously if I process something a lot I will remember it better, tis how the brain works. But I don’t have the time to do everything. So going to both benefit me selfishly and potentially entertain people who are bored enough to read this, I shall educate you about how to improve your memory via mental imagery. Maybe this info can be helpful :O ha, who you kidding jfeng~

So mental imagery. In short think of it as if you’re picturing something in your head, be it simply pencil or an elaborate detailed image of a… uh… tree? (why are you picturing either is beyond me~) What we’re trying to do is to combine images we make and create associations with another image. The greatest way to remember things is of course to make links, make networks; just like how our neurons in our brain is a network, we need to create a network with our knowledge.

First idea is called the method of loci, remembering things that are placed at different locations in a mental image of a spatial layout. For example, you want to remember you need to go to the bank today. You would thus picture maybe some cash in a spatial layout, say… around your sofa in your living room. By simply doing this you placed images at locations to help you retrieve them later. To remember this term… know that loci means location… yer that easy.

Pegword technique is trying to associate certain images with concrete words (such as apple, as opposed to abstract words like ‘justice’). In a way this is very similar to the previous method, but imo slightly difficult. What you do is create a list connection one to whatever number with another word, usually a word that rhymes, as rhyming helps memorization. So we can say one, bun; two, zoo; three, tree etc. Afterwards you associate the image of let’s say three;tree with what you’re trying to remember, going to the bank. Therefore you create an image of money hanging from the tree (if only that was true :D).

It all comes down to creating connections, associating one mental image with another and thus helping you remember. I actually find this near useless… then again maybe I should start using it more to see if it really helps… Not sure how it can aid us in exams since ‘theories’ are sort of abstract, we can’t picture it in our mind… hmm…

Well thanks for wasting your time, I have succeeded =). If it helped… yay… If it didn’t… you should have expected that. Anywho, 3 am, time for bed. Ace this exam~ :D

                                                                                                                                         ~JFeng

Another year, another post. Hmm, I’m not one to make New Year resolutions… but I feel like it’s time to set some goals and stick to it ;3

So bear with me, another long arse post ahead ;3 Wut I do best, no? :P

Most people are like “DON’T LOOK BACK TO 2011, SAY GOODBYE TO LAST YEAR, TIME FOR A NEW YEAR, BLAH BLAH BLAHHHH” hmm… well no = = . Living life filled with regret is bad yes, but one get better from their experience. We only improve by learning from all the stuff we’ve done. Every step taken is a setting up for another. That’s how our bloody brain works and sooo, let’s look back to 2011.

2011 was a wonderfully horrible year. In a way it was truly the most ‘balanced’ year of my life. If there’s an up, there’s a down. I gain something, I would lose something as well. Then again, that is how life is suppose to work; maintaining an equilibrium. Too much of one thing will always be bad. One of the few rules in life where it’s safe to say always. :D

Anyway, twenty-eleven was a year where I:

  • learned that I truly want to be in the neurology/psychology field. The human mind is just too interesting to ignore. It’ll be something I enjoy doing and I can contribute and benefit the society. What more can I ask?
  • traveled a lot. Took about 10 plane rides this year, more than I should. But the places I’ve been and the experiences I had were amazing. Must thank Hyu~, Moo-cow (lul) and my kindest bully (keke) for sharing that wonderful experience.
  • observed that friendship is such a delicate thing. Out of sight out of mind is a rule that applies 90% of the time. The 10% remaining are truly good friends and I thank them dearly.
  • met many new people, but so few stuck. Especially one good friend I’ve made in the latter part of this year; really enhanced the horribly boring fall term. Oh youuuu~ ;3
  • gamed way too darn much and should probably stop… lolz. Gaming as an escape from reality is probably not the only solution, must find another!~
  • didn’t work as hard as I should and could have. Let’s change that for 2012 ;D

I can probably go on more about my experiences this past year, but this post is already getting ridiculously long. Onto the resolutions:

1. Reduce the laziness.

Well doesn’t that sound generic JFeng? Chill bro. We’re all smart people, all capable people. However laziness really decrease that productivity. If we spend that lil more energy, that lil more effort on our daily life, ohhhhh the crap we can get done. When I need to get something done, I should get it done. No more of leaving it a few minutes or pushing it until a week later. Once the mind is set, nothing should stop it eh? This’ll take a lot of bloody self control…

2. Smarten up with people.

What does this mean? Simply put, delve into the human ways more. I don’t trust many people and I never will. Many tell me to ‘open up yoooo’… well I’ll try is all I can say. No guarantee (did I even spell it right… I don’t think I’ve ever typed this word…). There quite a lot more meaning to this resolution. I’ll keep it to myself ;3 keke

3. Lifelong learning, lifelong progress

Ideally we learn something everyday. Small, big, but hopefully something. This year, there shouldn’t be a day where I’m not learning. Will try to do something, get a hobby… hmmm… Open up my skills and abilities. Got to prepare myself when I get my own place nao~ :O you know wut, I should really really realllyyyy learn to read music for once. Lol, playing piano for all these years and still can’t read music is slightly problematic :P

I think three goals for now to start of the year sounds good. Of course from here on, I must break it into specific smaller goals, trying to attempt it everyday, easier psychologically to tackle. Probably won’t succeed, but meh, tis the attempt that matters :P

If you read the whole thing, bless you. And thank you. I had no idea you’d be that bored on New Years to spend 12 minutes and 38 seconds reading this. Post came up a bit late, didn’t think it’d take so long to write… so I didn’t really proof read it (too lazy… wait a sec… wasn’t I just telling myself to… oh I smell something burning g2g :P). Well, Happy New Year ;3 let’s work supa hard yer? Bring joy not only to your own life, but to those around you. Remember to smile now :) ciao~
